CIMSEC’s October DC Meet-Up

It’s the time of the month again when CIMSECians get hungry and/or thirsty. For October’s DC meet-up we’ll be returning to the Old Dominion Brewhouse in the Convention Center area, just north of Gallery Place/Chinatown.  We hope you’ll join us to discuss the maritime issues of the day, recap our International Maritime Satire Week, nominate topics for our next “week” of analysis, or just meet some interesting people.

 

Time:   Friday, 26 Oct, 6-10pm            Happy hour lasts til 7:00pm

Place:   Old Dominion Brewhouse, (look for a sign or ask up front for our area)

            1219 9th St., NW (Exit at the Mt. Vernon/Convention Center stop on the red line, on the other side of the convention center tunnel)

All are welcome and no RSVP is required, but if you’re planning on coming please drop me a line so we have an idea of how many seats to reserve: director@cimsec.org

A Great Leap for Mankind Takes the Last Step for a Man

An accomplishment that should have never remained so unique.

Today, a piece of America’s soul has passed. Neil Armstrong, first of humanity’s representatives to stride upon a celestial body, has died. His passing is part of a greater trend, a legacy of starry-eyed optimism left behind in the morass of temporal practicality. Today, the first of our number to turn and look upon earth from a foreign body joins our manned mars program, our shuttle program, and the once unfettered collective dreams he carried with him.

CIMSEC is a blog about maritime security. Is not the maritime domain  primarily defined as a vast commons that hosts a sustained presence through buoyancy alone? An even greater commons awaits above, where although the vessels look far different, they are called ships nonetheless. Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, one of the fathers of modern rocketry, once said, “A planet is the cradle of mind, but one cannot live in a cradle forever.” Neil Armstrong took those first baby steps out of the cradle, learning to walk for us all. As our heroes fade away, we should keep their memories, and our future, alive… by learning to run.

It’s the time of the month again when CIMSECians get hungry and/or thirsty. For August and September’s DC meet-up we’ll be heading to the District of Pi Pizzeria in the Gallery Place/Chinatown area. We hope you’ll join us to discuss the maritime issues of the day and cap our Sea-based Nation’s Week, or just meet some interesting people.

 

Time:   Wednesday, 5 Sep, 6-10pm            Happy hour lasts til 6:30pm

Place:   District of Pi Pizzeria, (look for a sign or ask up front for our area)

And The Winner Is….

Seasteaders, we’re coming for you.

The votes of our first coverage-focusing poll have been tallied and it looks as though the crew at CIMSEC will be training their analytic guns at new Sea-Based Nations, which handidly beat runners-up Russia and Brazil in the “Country” polling. Sea-Based Nations Week will commence 27 August, so anyone with an interest in suggesting a line of inquiry or wishing to do some writing of their own can drop me a line at director@cimsec.org. For an idea of what sea-based nations are, exactly, check out Gizmodo, the Economist, or The Seasteading Institute.

In the “Threats, Platforms, Technologies” category, “U.S. Basing Options” squeaked by in a 1-vote win over “Shipbuilding Modularity” and will be the subject of a future article as well. Those subjects and countries which lost in the voting will never be spoken of again at this site (okay, we’ll keep them on the back-burner).

In other news, info will be out shortly on our DC August meet-up. So stay tuned!
