Sea Control 454 – Maritime Trade, Averages, and Institutional Development in the Low Countries with Dr. Gijs Dreijer

Dr. Gijs Dreijer joins the program to discuss maritime risk management and his new book: The Power and Pains of Polysemy: Maritime Trade, Averages and Institutional Development in the Low Countries (15th-16th Centuries).

Gijs Dreijer (1992) completed his MA at Leiden University in 2017 and subsequently started a joint PhD degree at the University of Exeter (History) and the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (Law). In 2021 he returned to Leiden University to work as a postdoc in the VICI project of Catia Antunes.

Will Sofrin joins the program to discuss his book All Hands on Deck. The book is about his experiences during an epic sail on the tall ship, Rose, from Newport, RI to San Diego, CA.

Will Sofrin is a master shipwright, former professional tall ship sailor, and has taught at MIT. He has sailed over thirty thousand miles in his career.

Sea Control 452 – The Ocean and Us with Farah Obaidullah and Rebecca Hubbard

Farah Obaidullah and Rebecca Hubbard join the program to discuss overfishing and their edited volume: The Ocean and Us.

Farah Obaidullah is a long time ocean advocate, consultant and the Founder of the non-profit Women4Oceans; a non-profit focused on “securing healthy oceans for the sake of human survival and human-wellbeing.” Obaidullah has worked on non-profit campaigns to address IUU fishing, labor abuse and slavery at sea.

Rebecca Hubbard is the Director of High Seas Alliance; a non-profit working toward the establishment of high seas protection areas and stronger high seas governance. Hubbard has been working for over 17 years on various environmental campaigns.

Longtime friend and supporter of the podcast, Dr. Claude Berube, returns to discuss his latest work of fiction, The Philippine Pact, the latest entry in the Connor Stark novel series.

Claude has taught at the United States Naval Academy, worked at the Office of Naval Intelligence and the U.S. Senate, and as an officer in the Navy Reserve deployed overseas. He has been a fellow with both the Brookings Institution and Heritage Foundation.
