Sea Control 504 – Chinese Maritime Interests in the Indian Ocean with Commodore Venugopal Vengalil

Commodore Venugopal Vengalil joins the program to discuss China’s maritime interests in the Indian Ocean.

Commodore Vengalil graduated from National Defense Academy and was commissioned into Indian Navy in 1979. He is a specialist in Anti-Submarine Warfare and Mine Countermeasures. Among various assignments, he was the Naval Officer in Charge, Mumbai, prior to his retirement in 2007. Post retirement he worked as the head of shipping operations for a logistics company in Oman for five years and was fully involved in overseeing naval ships on anti-piracy patrol.

He is an alumnus of Defense Services Staff College Wellington, College of Naval Warfare, Mumbai, and Asia Pacific Centre for Security Studies, Honolulu, U.S. He writes in various forums on Maritime security issues. He is a distinguished member of Chennai Centre for China Studies.

Ray Powell joins the program to discuss his recent work “Game Changer: The Philippines’ Assertive Transparency Campaign: How the Philippines Rewrote the Counter Gray Zone Playbook in 2023.”

Ray Powell is the Founder and Director of SeaLight, a maritime transparency project of the Gordian Knot Center for National Security Innovation at Stanford University, California. Powell served 35 years in the U.S. Air Force, including posts in the Philippines, Japan, Germany, and Qatar, as well as combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He served as the U.S. Air Attaché to Vietnam and the U.S. Defense Attaché to Australia.

Sea Control 484 – LST-325: From Normandy to Indiana with Ken Rupp

Ken Rupp joins the program to discuss the museum ship LST-325. She is the last sailing LST in the world and makes annual cruises on the rivers of the United States.

Rupp, a retired U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant, has volunteered on LST-325 for five years and is currently serving as the Cruise Director. He also works in the Engine Department and as an EMT while underway.
