Dr. Helen Scales joins the program to discuss the future of the world’s oceans and the environmental threats that they face.

Helen Scales, PhD, is a marine biologist, writer, and broadcaster. She is the author of many books about the ocean including The Brilliant Abyss and Spirals in Time, and the children’s books What a Shell Can Tell and Scientists in the Wild. She writes for National Geographic Magazine, the Guardian, and New Scientist, among others. She teaches at Cambridge University, is a storytelling ambassador for the Save Our Seas Foundation, and science advisor for the marine conservation charity Sea Changers.

Sea Control 545 – Naval Operations in the Mexican-American War

Lt. Col. Nathan Jennings, Ph D joins the program to discuss naval operations in the Mexican-American War. Jennings discusses Winfried Scott’s landing at Veracruz, the largest U.S. landing prior to World War Two, and also less well-known operations in the Gulf of Mexico. Nathan is an associate professor and Army strategist at the US Army Command and General Staff College.

Dr. Flannery discusses how alliances with native Filipinos to combat piracy in the region was essential for Spanish success in the Philippines. Dr. Flannery is a research fellow in the Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences at Australian Catholic University.
