I was ridiculed by many “non-risk taking senior officers” for entering and departing ports during the dead of night while in command of an AO – both In and OCONUS. Inappropriate, foolish and irresponsible described my actions. Many went on to make flag and take on senior mentor positions. I feel sorry for the youngsters (SWOS) they mentored. Later on in life I read Craig Symonds, “The US Navy in WWII”… the courage on display at Guadalcanal!!! Wow! Todays SWOS need to learn how to drive and fight their ships.
