Sea Control 373 – A Coercive Quarantine of Taiwan with Dr. Bradley Martin and Kristen Gunness

Bradley Martin and Kristen Gunness join us to discuss what a coercive quarantine of Taiwan might look like, the implications, and associated risks for escalation.

Bradley Martin is the director of the RAND National Security Supply Chain Institute, and a senior policy researcher at the RAND Corporation. Martin retired from the Navy as a surface warfare Captain after 30 years service, including four command tours.

Kristen Gunness is a senior policy researcher in the RAND Corporation’s Washington Office. Her background includes military, security, and foreign policy issues in the Indo Pacific region with a focus on China.

Sea Control 372 – The Problem with Autonomous Ships

In the wake of the U.S. Navy testing uncrewed vessels as part of the Rim of the Pacific exercise, Johnathan Falcone and Jonathan Panter join the podcast to discuss possible drawbacks of autonomous vessels.

Jonathan Panter is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Political Science at Columbia University. His research examines naval organizational practices and crisis management. Prior to attending Columbia, he served as a surface warfare officer in the U.S. Navy.

Johnathan Falcone is an active-duty surface warfare officer in the U.S. Navy, serving as chief engineer aboard a littoral combat ship. He is a graduate of Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs and Yale University.

Gina Fiore is a senior associate with Pew’s Ending Illegal Fishing Project. She manages projects related to illegal fishing and convergence crimes and acts as a liaison between Pew and the military and national security communities.

Jason Ileto joins us to discuss cybersecurity, cyber warfare, and the potential impact on strategic sealift capability.

Commander Jason Ileto is a supply officer in the US Navy. He earned a master of science in operations research from the Naval Postgraduate School in 2011 and is currently pursuing a graduate degree at the Naval War College. He has conducted a directed research project under the Cyber and Innovation Policy Institute (CIPI) Vice Admiral Samuel L. Gravely Jr. Program.
